Quite often trails that show initial  promise from the air end up being a disappointment in reality….  however on this occasion with guiding from MTB Spain it was quite the opposite….

Total Mountain Biking had arranged a Mountain Biking trip in April 2015 with “MTB Spain”, a MTB “lift assisted” guiding company run by Martyn Cassell and James Williams to explore the trails around the Alicante and Benidorm regions. James Williams has family living in the area and with an appetite for exploration in over 12 years has discovered some amazing technical riding with the sort of variety and elevation that would entice British riders away from our interesting winter climate… and so MTB Spain was born as a commercial business.IMAG3670       IMAG3749
They currently have over 35 different trails which all start high in the mountains after an uplift by minibus and trailer. With an 85% bias towards descending and a small amount of traversing and climbing the trails plummet down to more modest altitude over some of the most technical and flowing trails I have ever ridden, its like descending the Garburn Pass in the Lake District but on Steroids… and with a picture postcard view in every direction MTB Spain have certainly got something special. The weather here at this time of year is the right side of comfortable, plenty of sun but still cool enough in the mountains to prevent overheating, so its easy to see the attraction for British Mountain Bikers looking to get rid of those winter blues.

IMAG3764At the end of each day we were able to retreat to our 1st class catered villa and relax by the private pool, where some guests were tinkering with bikes, sorting problems that had arisen during the day, a full set of tools was provided by MTB Spain to save you flying out with your own and other guests were uploading GoPro footage which highlights just how brutal the terrain is out here on the bikes. Then we get the call for dinner by the owners of the Villa… a superb home cooked 3 course meal with unlimited wine…. nuff said!

It was a fantastic trip and all in all we had between 3-4 uplifts a day for 6 days, each descent was between 45 mins and 2 hours which kept IMAG3770us riding all day and we’d certainly had enough physically by the end of each day… the Guides were first class and their knowledge of the terrain was unquestionable and as a fellow MTB Guide I certainly appreciate the amount of effort that will have been put in to put these routes together, from existing DH tracks to random goat tracks it was a quality feat of exploration… A question I have been asked recently is if i had a choice between going to the Alps or Spain….? well…I would be back here in a flash…!
