MTB Leader Awards

Mountain Bike Coaching UK (MBCuk) is one of the UK’s leading awarding bodies and course training providers of Mountain Bike Leader Awards and Coaching Qualifications.

Originally established as the Association of British Cycling Coaches ‘’PCCA Mountain Bike Leader’’ qualification in 1994, and now re-branded as MBCuk, these are the ”longest established” off road Mountain Bike Leader Awards in the UK. Professional indemnity insurance for up to £5m can be provided through the Association of British Cycle Coaches (www.abcc.co.uk)

MBCuk is inspected and recognised by the Adventure Activities Licencing Agency (www.hse.gov.uk/aala) and licensed by Adventuremark (www.adventuremark.co.uk)

MBCuk have trained and qualified nearly 4000 candidates so far and is also one of the main training providers of choice for the British Armed Forces. MBCuk currently has a small team of select tutors in order to maintain the standardisation and quality control of its leader and coaching qualifications.

Important Due to the MBCuk (Awarding Body) course/assesment policy there will need to be a minimum of 4 candidates booked on to the course for it to go ahead as planned. If the course fails to attract at least 4 candidates by 7 days prior to the course start date then it will be cancelled. The existing candidates will then be offered a place on the next available course, if a convenient course date cannot be found then a full refund will be given.

MBCuk Qualification Pathway


The MBCuk TL is a 2 day course which is part theory and part practical. Candidates will be taught and assessed on how to lead and coach a novice group in an off road environment safely and effectively. Successful candidates can then lead and coach 6 riders on ‘’Moderate Graded’’ technical terrain Click here worldwide. This course is delivered as a joint TL/TTL course, The qualification level awarded will depend on the candidates current ability and Log Book experience.

Pre Requisites –
• Minimum age 18 years
• Must produce a Log Book with at least 10 quality Mountain Bike Days logged click here
• Be able to meet the Criteria at MBCuk Level 1 Skills click here
• Be competent in the use of a map and compass
• Have experience in Basic Bike Maintenance and First Aid
• Once completed, a valid First Aid Certificate must be held

Please note – Candidates on course who do not meet this criteria or fail to display sufficient evidence of these competencies may be awarded a TL ‘Training Course’ certificate instead. All candidates will also receive a detailed Action Plan.

Trail Leaders wishing to lead groups in Upland or Mountainous defined terrain must be proficient in that environment and plan appropriate routes guided by the Risk Assessment process.


The MBCuk TTL is a 2 day course which is part theory and part practical. Candidates will be assessed on leading and coaching an intermediate group in an off road environment safely and effectively. During the course candidates will be expected to informally deliver various relevant MTB topics similar to those taught on the Trail Leader to the other members of the course. Successful candidates will then be able to lead and coach 6 riders on ‘’Difficult Graded’’ technical terrain Click here worldwide. This course is delivered as a joint TL/TTL course, The qualification level awarded will depend on the candidates current ability and Log Book experience.

Pre Requisites –
• Minimum age 18 years
• Trail Leader (or equivalent) qualified or logged evidence of APEL
• Must produce a Log Book with at least 20 quality Mountain Bike Days logged click here
• Some of which must be over 3 hours, including Leading Groups
• Be able to meet the Criteria at MBCuk Level 2 Skills click here
• Proficient in a Hill Walking or Mountaineering environment
• Competent in the use of a map and compass
• Have experience in intermediate Bike Maintenance and First Aid
• Once Completed, a valid First Aid Certificate must be held

Technical Trail Leaders wishing to lead groups in Upland or Mountainous defined terrain must be proficient in that environment and plan appropriate routes guided by the Risk Assessment process.


The “MBC” is MBCuk’s most prestigious award… It is a modular course to assess a candidate’s ability to coach and lead technical riding at advanced levels including racing and physical performance. Module one is a three day training and assessment course. Module two is the successful completion of the ABCC Coach level 3 Award. Successful candidates can then lead and coach 6 riders on terrain up to and including CTC graded ‘’Severe’’ terrain click here worldwide.

Pre Requisites –
• Minimum age 18 years
• Technical Trail Leader (or equivalent) qualified
• Must produce a Log Book with at least 20 quality Mountain Bike Days logged over 5hrs since TTL click here
• Have a background in Coaching and Leading Individuals and Groups
• Be able to meet the Criteria at MBCuk Level 3 Skills click here
• Proficient in a Hill Walking or Mountaineering environment
• Competent in the use of a map and compass
• Have experience in advanced Bike Maintenance and First Aid
• Once Completed, a valid First Aid Certificate must be held

The MBCuk Tutor Course is a modular course designed to train suitably qualified and experienced candidates to implement the MBCuk Coaching and Leading Scheme. It includes a Coach Process and Trainer Assessor module, and a six month Mentoring module. Successful candidates can then deliver the MBCuk Coaching and Leading Scheme under the guidelines of the MBCuk Tutor policy.

Pre Requisites -
• Minimum age 18 years
• Mountain Bike Coach qualified (or equivalent) with at least 1 years’ experience
• Must have a wide range of experience in leading and coaching
• The completion of the ABCC Full Coaches award and or APEL as required
• Working knowledge of the training and assessing process
• Once Completed, a valid First Aid Certificate must be held
