Marie Curie MTB C2C

8 March 15….

And so it begins again….. The Marie Curie MTB C2C….Training for 3 days of riding across the North of England on a Mountain IMG_0352Bike… Every year in June about 55 would be adventurers amass in Grange over Sands on the west coast to ride across the country to Scarborough on the east coast via Hawes and Osmotherly. They are an unlikely bunch…! but never the less they will succeed in riding the 158 mile route over 3 days. They do it in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care, a fantastic charity who help get the care needed for patients to enjoy their final days in the comfort of their own home surrounded by their family.

IMG_0371We at “Total Mountain Biking” have volunteered to Guide the “fast” group for the last 2 years and are set to make it a 3rd time this year in June. Its a humbling privilege to witness the determination and pride displayed by the participants who would be the first to admit to not being classed as fit/keen Mountain Bikers but who still manage to make it across the country, Its a massive achievement… especially those who do it on modest bikes and even one elderly gentleman who does it on a shopping bike… literally…!IMG_0376

In the months running up to the C2C, training rides are put on to help prepare the riders for the sort of physical and technical challenges ahead. These rides are usually led in turn by the 3-4 guides who will guide on the C2C, this allows us to get to know the riders a bit better before June. The event this year is to be held on 19-21 June 15.

Im am often asked what is the most stand out memory of such an amazing experience…? well… to be honest its the changing landscape and architecture as you cross the land, from Cumbria to the Yorkshire Dales and then to the NY Moors… it is constantly changing in line with the local natural material with which it is built…. quite surreal to know that you have pedaled through it all in 3 days…!
